The founders

We are Calum and Katie, both love being outdoors, passionate surfers but also climbers, skiers, snowboarders and explorers. We met in 2018 at a beach near Bundoran and quickly found out that we want to spend a lot of our time surfing and adventuring together. Since then we spend our summers on the Irish west coast surfing and teaching people how to surf, Katie spends winters in the snow, Calum in county Donegal chasing waves.

In autumn 2022 we decided to try something new and open our own little surfschool. With WeSurf we want to try and focus on progressive several day-courses to help our guests become safe, keen and independent surfers. To achieve that, we will use our different backgrounds and experiences from teaching surfing and other sports to maximise your improvement and fun in the waves.

Calum

Cal grew up in county Clare  Ireland, spending a lot of his free time adventuring in the outdoors and kayaking all the lakes and rivers he and his friends could find. He moved to Bundoran in 2013, did his surfinstructor level 1 and never left our Irish surf capital after that. He loves surfing, the wilder and bigger the better, which is why he started surfing bigger waves, including some at Mullaghmore in 2021. He can give you special insights about duckdiving more powerful waves and holding your breath for longer holddowns but he can also patiently draw you a picture of how currents work or help you with your first pop-up.

Cal rarely gets tired and never gets enough time in the water so be prepared to surf a lot .

Katie

Katie grew up on a farm in Switzerland, moving to the mountains for more snowboarding when she was 16 years old. She started teaching snowsports and has been teaching it ever since, which gives her more than 15 years of teaching experience by now. She is also coaching other Snowboard instructors as a member of the SwissSnowsports Education pool and Demoteam, where they really focus on constantly developing new teaching methods and improving existing methods. She started surfing in 2011 on a 6 months surf trip through Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand and did her level 1 surfcoach in 2020.

Our Teaching Methods

Our goal is to teach you every part about surfing. from the outside it might look like jumping into the sea with a piece of foam, paddling out and then standing on the board is all there is to it. But surfers have a deep knowledge of of their environment. With one glance at their local spot they know how high the tide is, where the rip currents are and exactly where they want to sit to have the best session possible considering crowd pressure etc. Some people don't even realise there is a surfing etiquette, a kind of rules of the road that surfers follow in the water.

We want to teach our students all these aspects of surfing and more. To do this we have three levels that you can choose: beginner, improver and advanced click here for more info. By having students together in a similar level it means we can teach the appropriate lessons for  their level and as they go through the levels we can add more and more detail as needed. This will allow the students to maximise their potential in the time provided.

We are interested in your surfing goals and in the booking page there is space for you to share them with us. This will help us to tailor our sessions for you. While we have some theory parts in our sessions we try to keep it to minimum as we want our students to have the maximum water time possible.

Both Calum and Katie completed there level 2 ISA surf coach award in autumn 2022, where we got to practice a lot with technical break downs, video analysis and specific feedbacks to improve our coaching. With our combined nearly 25 years of coaching experience and Katie's work with SwissSnowsports teaching instructors we feel confident we can provide an excellent experience for our Clients.
